Their chemical structure, botany of the source plants, their cultivation and biotechnological studies done on the source plants to increase the production of these compounds are discussed. The author has done research on artemisinin which was on the effect of sterol inhibitors on artemisinin production in a cell free system from plants and tissue cultures of Artemisia annua.

Dr. Jose Kudakasseril is a scientist and a teacher. He took his doctoral degree in Botany from the University of New Hampshire, USA. His post doctoral research was on an antimalarial compound called Artemisinin which was done at University of Minnesota, USA. He has taught at various institutions such as Kenyon College, Ohio, USA and K.C College, Mumbai. He has worked at the Unilever Research Centre in Mumbai and at the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysore, India. He is now teaching at Brilliant Study Centre, at Pala, in Kerala, India
