Subrat SaurabhAuthor of Kuch Woh PalOn criteria, body cells use glucose as their major energy source. Glucose is mainly derived from dietary carbohydrates, which include starchy foods and sugar such as pasta and bread which are broken down by the body into simple sugars. Glucose can be stored as glycogen in muscle and liver or can be used as fuel for the body. If there is no glucose left to be used for energy, the body in turn seeks another strategy to be able to meet demands. Indeed, the body begins to accumulate fat from triglycerides to serve as a glucose provider. A by-product of this process is ketones.
The acids produced in blood and ending in urine are ketones. In small amounts, they show that the body breaks down fat, but a large amount of ketones poisons the body and this process is known as ketoacidosis.
Ketosis refers to a metabolic state whereby fat stored in the body is converted into energy, releasing ketones during the process.
