Subrat SaurabhAuthor of Kuch Woh PalA ketogenic diet or keto diet is a fairly popular low-carb diet, in which the body produces ketones in the liver that are used as energy. People also refer to this diet as low carb high fat, low carb diet etc.
When we eat high amounts of carb, our body produces glucose and insulin. Glucose is the easiest molecule to convert and use as energy, so our bodies chose it over other energy sources. Insulin is produced in your blood to carry glucose around the body.
Since the body is using glucose as its primary source of energy, fat is not required; So they freeze. Therefore, on high carb diets, which we usually consume, our body uses glucose as an energy source, resulting in the storage of fat. Thus, by reducing carb intake, the body goes into a state called ketosis.
Ketosis is a natural process whose body helps us when our food is depleted. In this process, ketones are produced by breaking down fat in the liver.
The purpose of maintaining a keto diet is to force your body to go into this metabolic state. But no one has to do this by staying hungry, instead you have to reduce your carb intake.
Our body is quite friendly, if you overload it with fat, instead of carbs it will start burning ketones as the primary source of energy instead of glucose.
