The book is a translation of the original Maithili novel 'Sooryasta' by Mayanand Mishra. The story relates to pre-Independence days in a rural setting in the heart of Mithila where an indigo-growing English landlord lives. His daughter is very much attracted towards the Indian culture and lifestyle and adopts the same for herself. To serve society she persuades her father to give land and money to open an English teaching school for the local children. She also joins the Khadi and Charkha movement initiated by Gandhiji. She falls in love with a local youth who is a Gandhian worker and also her co-worker in the school but both have decided not to marry. The end is very dramatic.

Yogendra Pathak Viyogi

Mayanand Mishra (1934-2013), the original author, has been a unique signature in both Maithili and Hindi literature. Along with Lalit and Rajkamal, he formed the triumvirate of Hindi and Maithili writings in his time. Apart from writing in various genres, he was the editor of the popular Maithili journal ‘Abhivyanjana’ and famous as ‘Manch Samrat (Stage King)’ for his eloquent compering role in all stage events. His published works include four collections of short stories, four novels, two collections of poems and songs and an autobiography, all in Maithili and five novels in Hindi. He was the recipient of the Sahitya Academy Award for his Maithili novel ‘Mantraputra’ in 1988, the Grierson Award of the Government of Bihar and ‘Prabodh Sahitya Samman’. 

Yogendra Pathak Viyogi (b1948),  the Translator, is a retired Department of Atomic Energy scientist. He has written novels, short stories, science fiction, satire, popular science essays and drama in Maithili. In English, his works include ‘Folktales of Mithila, ‘Gonu Jha of Mithila’, ‘Folk Ballad of Mithila’ and the translation of  Braj Kishor Verma ‘Manipadma’s Maithili novel ‘Bhartik Biladi’.
