 Tobacco from being just another plant has evolved to one of the most sought after material that has imprinted its footprints in the lives of millions of people worldwide creating an induced chronic pandemic. Majority of the human beings are trapped within this complex web of assumed dependence on tobacco. Though health warnings are given in the tobacco products, people tend to use those products either due to their negligence or due to their lack of proper awareness. Since progressive awareness and realization of the problem will itself lead to solution, this book is created to give an insight of the scenario in India webbed around tobacco, which may create a social impact and increase awareness about tobacco. 

The initial chapters are intended to provide the details of tobacco for a new comer tracing its origin, the long trail of tobacco especially in India – its imperviousness in culture and fashion in different forms, e-cigarettes the form which has recently achieved high public attention, various botanical types, harvesting and processing of tobacco & the components of tobacco. The later chapters are intended to address the real Indian Scenario of the impact of tobacco on various aspects of life – social, economical, environmental and the physical health. Traditional uses of tobacco and its systemic health effects that are not intuitively recognized and the addiction problems are discussed in detail.

Dr. Suganya Rajaram,  Reader of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology with over seven years of academic experience at Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry. With interest in Public Health, she has been a part of campus organized in surrounding villages and health  centres thereby gaining field experience. She has developed views to be shared with health community working in the field of Tobacco. She completed her BDS and MDS  from Mahatma Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Dental Sciences, Pondicherry. She has done 5 research projects, authored 15 national and international publications and filed 4 copyrights to her credit. At present, she has been working as a co-investigator on a project funded by Indian Council of Medical Research. 

Dr.  A. Santha Devy, Professor and Head of the Department, in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology, Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Science, India. She completed her MDS from Mahatma Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Dental Sciences, Pondicherry. She has a working experience of 16 years training both the Undergraduates and the Post graduates. She has also been a guide to PhD students. She has published nearly 33 scientific articles in various National and International Journals. She is also the editorial member in journals of SBV University.

Dr. Sivaramakrishnan Muthanandam, obtained his MDS degree from MeenakshiAmmalDental College, MAHER, Chennai in 2013. He is currently working as Associate Professor, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology, Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences, Pondicherry. He has been into academics and has been teaching both UG & PG students for 10 years. He has more than 30 international & national publications in indexed journals to his credit. He also has a published online course in VidyaMitra, Inflibnet initiative, under NME-ICET, MHRD, Gov. of India. He has authored a chapter in a book titled: Preterm birth – Prevalence, risk factors & Management. He is also serving in editorial board and peer review team of reputed journals. He is the primary investigator of a project on prevention of oral cancer among Narikuravar tribal population funded by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Government of India.
