EVIL EYE

My parents were asleep while I was seated at the edge of the window. The silence of midnight was music to my ears as I peered out at the lights decorating all the houses in the neighbourhood. This late night light-gazing was only possible since my parents and I have a different room. Diwali was round the corner and every often a firecracker was heard. The twinkling golden lights on my window looked very pretty too. I sat, dazed for a long while. A mosquito buzzed near my ear and I shook myself out of the trance. I looked at the window pane, so plain, so empty. Out of the blue, I remembered the lucky charm my friend Maya had gifted me. The charm had two eyes painted on it.

"The shopkeeper said it's to keep an eye on the evil.", Maya had said. Over the holidays she had bought a bunch of charms and keychains for her friends. One such charm she had gifted to me.

Smiling as I remember her sweet gesture I hung the charm on the window seal. It just added to the prettiness. The eyes were very finely painted for a charm so small. It would easily fit in the palm of my hand yet it was a result of great craftsmanship.

I leant against the window again. There was barely any wind but within minutes a movement in the dead of the night caught my attention. The charm was dangling, oscillating as if someone had pushed it. It was an insect perhaps. I looked at my mobile. 2 a.m. in the morning. I should get to bed. The charm moved again. Maybe it's the breeze, but was there any? I felt sleepy, too exhausted to move a muscle. Why didn't the charm stop moving? I would remove it. I couldn't keep my eyes open. I felt my eyes fluttering shut, unable to control anymore.

"Get up! Haven't I told you not to fall asleep there. How much time does it take for you to shift to your bed?", my mother shouted and my eyes fickered open. My eyes were playing tricks or maybe it was just a dream, I thought. I saw myself but not through a mirror or a picture. I, rather my figure was in deep slumber, head rested on the hands. I struggled to move my body but when I tried all I felt was a peircing pain. It felt as if someone was tugging at my hair to hold me back. I wanted to scream, I couldn't. I wanted to look around, I couldn't. The more I tried to move the more I felt pain as if I was dangling in the air by my hair. Terror was ruling my mind when I saw the figure move. She replied to my mother calling me. Her voice; it was mine too.

"I'm coming, Ma. Sorry for falling asleep here. I was tired, I guess."

"Come quick!", my mother replied. I stared in horror as I watched her rise from the chair. My figure, it looked humongous to me. I looked at my own figure, intimidated. I could be crushed by those hands in a jiffy. Till now I had not even realized that my eyelids wouldn't close too. I realized it when a tear slipped through my eyes.

As if struck by lightening I realized. I; I was no longer Aisha. I was now merely a keychain that hung from the panes of an open window. I tried to shout again, but to no result. She turned, bent, looked at me and smiled. The same face I looked at in the mirror everyday prior to this was terrorizing me but I still had little hope that she would help me out. I was almost relieved when she picked me up in her hand. Then all my hopes shattered as she flung me out of the window. There was absolutely nothing I could do as I felt myself falling down the storeys. Her turning her back towards the window was the last thing I saw before I felt blinding pain. I realized I was on the ground. I saw a huge crack in my vision as I lay, facing the limitless pretty sky of dawn. No one would care for a forsaken broken charm. Aisha is she who lives and as my name suggests I'll be the one who lives. The one living a broken life.

I wish there is something, anything I can do to stop Maya from gifting the similar charms and keychains to her other friends.
