The word itself comes from the ancient Latin term ‘Statisticum’ (collegium) meaning “a lecture on the state of affairs”. In Italian, it pronounce as Statistik means “Collection of data involving the State”. Gradually the term came to be used to describe the collection of any sort of data. Later on, Statistics was defined as the branch of Mathematics which deals with numerical data. Now, Statistics is emerging as an interpretation of data obtained by conducting research.
