Notion Press’ Latest is a Fresh Narrative in the Espionage Fiction Genre
“It’s the oldest question of all, George. Who can spy on the spies?” – John Le Carre, Author
Over the years, espionage fiction had always been obsessed with exhilarating narratives that are thrilling, dangerous, and sometimes, even a little sexy. It had religiously followed a certain pattern of shifting identities and allegiances. However, times have changed, and so have the stories of this genre.
Authors have taken spy fiction to a whole new level, exploring the real-life narratives in detail, and hence, growing more diverse with every book. Fret not, there’s still plenty of room for you to still feel the thrill as these unseen heroes save the world, now and again.
Notion Press, India’s leading self-publishing platform, presents The Back Ender by Udayan Mukerji, a captivating narrative that explores the life of a mid-level, middle-aged officer in the Internal Security Agency (ISA) through various vivid stories.
Udayan Mukerji’s The Back Ender revolves around the discoveries, foibles, and episodic experiences in internal security surrounding Pinto at the ISA. The book unfolds several moments in his life as he discovers that the template for spy catching is not drawn from James Bond, but is actually closer to the Le Carre narrative laced with Wodehousian humor. Much of it is patient pursuit and back-end planning lit by the occasional flash of brilliance.
Even without any adrenaline spikes and meetings in the shadows; Pinto enjoys his job with all the mental challenges and the perseverance it requires. Like in any other government department, he too has to deal with failing room coolers, an aging car and the quirks of
officialdom; but there is a professional core in the organization that, with good humor, sensitivity and patience, is able to carry the day.
Moreover, The Back Ender has side stories that, though occasionally anecdotal, paint Pinto’s life in vibrant colors.
Author Udayan Mukerji retired from the Indian Police Service after more than three decades of service. During his career, Mukerji functioned at various levels and garnered immense experience as well as thoroughgoing expertise in areas dealing variously with homeland security, the security of Indian Missions abroad, internal security, communications security, and investigations into security deficiencies.
Mukerji is the recipient of the prestigious Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service. Furthermore, he is an advocate and has handled litigation and legal counseling in diverse areas including criminal matters, torts, writ petitions, and contracts. Mukerji has co-authored three books on the law; The Law of Bail, Law for Prevention of Money Laundering, and Jurisprudence of Privacy.
