Retired as a principal scientist at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the author has 39 years of research experience in plant sciences and crop genetic resources and has published 78 research papers in national/international journals, chapters in 7 books, 12 books/crop catalogues, 23 magazine articles and presented papers in 30 conferences. A Master’s degree gold medalist from the University of Madras (1974), has worked since 1978 on economic/medicinal plants, crops/fruit varieties and their wild relatives. His doctoral thesis was on a desert medicinal tree (Balanites) that has ‘diosgenin’, a steroid saponin, used in the synthesis of sex hormones and steroid-anabolic drugs. Under an Indo-US PGR project, he has visited the USA in 1995.
